Position Focus: 

Reporting to the Director of Alumni Engagement, the Deputy Director works with international Yale School of Management (SOM) alumni to foster alumni engagement with the school. The Deputy Director will play a pivotal role at the school to develop and execute a strategy that connects and engages international alumni at the regional level with each other, with alumni from the broader Yale community and alumni of the Global Network for Advanced Management schools. As Yale SOM is a member of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM), a network of top business schools around the world (, the Deputy Director is responsible for developing a strategy to ensure international chapter leaders are connected with GNAM alumni groups/clubs/chapters in their region. Develops close working relationships with counterparts on staff at GNAM schools to leverage faculty from Yale SOM and other GNAM schools as they travel throughout the world meeting with alumni.  Responsible for additional special projects, including working with Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations on annual donor-funded scholarship reporting to alumni and friends of Yale SOM.

Essential Duties: 

  1. In collaboration with Director for Alumni Engagement, develop and implement chapter specific strategic plans, working with international chapter leaders and chapter planning committees to assess their needs and the needs of interests of their chapter's alumni base to develop and create chapter-specific programing.
  2. Develop strong working relationships with Yale SOM colleagues in the Global Initiatives Department and with counterparts at the AYA and other G&P schools, working with them to maximize collaboration and partnership between SOM international chapters, Yale Clubs and other G&P school alumni communities.
  3. Develop strong working relationships with counterparts at Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) schools and with them develop a strategic plan to activate the GNAM for GNAM alumni, including SOM alumni, this may include regional and city based GNAM volunteer leader workshops and developing alumni specific GNAM program outputs.
  4. In concert with Assistant Dean for Alumni Relations, Director for Alumni Engagement and SOM Board Relations, identify and recruit key volunteers for participation in global committees and boards, and ensure smooth chapter leadership transitions.
  5. Develop relationships with SOM faculty and leverage their travel for global alumni engagement opportunities.
  6. Responsible for all aspects of management of the Yale SOM Alumni Advisory Board, including high-level planning and implementation of board meetings, and evaluating strategic engagement opportunities and strategic planning for its members. Provide committee members with continuous support, including developing agendas, assisting with Board recruitment activities, and provide updates on relevant initiatives across Yale SOM and its schools and units
  7. Working collaboratively with Assistant Dean for Alumni Relations, the Deputy Director is the primary staff member responsible for planning strategic engagement activities, communications, and outreach efforts for the Alumni Advisory Board.
  8. Serve as primary contact and assist in information flow between Alumni Advisory Board members and key constituencies at SOM and throughout Yale.
  9. Develop and maintain pipelines of future Alumni Advisory Board members, and facilitate the onboarding of new members.
  10. Working with the SOM Board Relations team, develop, execute and manage plan for continued engagement for retiring members of all SOM Boards and Councils.
  11. Supports and participates in strategic planning meetings with the SOM Sr. Associate Dean, other deans at SOM, and other institutional leadership.
  12. Responsible for additional special projects as assigned by SOM Development and Alumni Relations Senior Leadership, including working in collaboration with Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations to edit and prepare high-touch, annual student scholarship reports for presentation to donors.

Required Education & Experience: 

Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related work experience in alumni relations, and/or non-profit volunteer management, or an equivalent combination of experience and education, preferably internationally or domestically with a strong international component.

Required Skills & Abilities:   

  1. Superior interpersonal skills. Customer service excellence and excellent skills in working with a variety of alumni groups and volunteers. Ability to represent the School well in working collegially with peers and colleagues within and outside the University, including GNAM peer schools.
  2. Strong ability to craft and articulate messages for various audiences. Superior demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
  3. Must be detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced and goal-oriented environment and have experience with event management. Ability to handle crises as well as a wide range of short- and long-term management issues.
  4. Strong creative skills and ability to market programs to alumni. Strong computer skills and analytical skills, including ability to work with advanced MS Office, complex databases and spreadsheets.
  5. Must be able to travel extensively within US and internationally on an as needed basis.
