The frameworks that I learned in class have given me a better grasp on our business’s products and operations, and helped me communicate the value and opportunity in new ideas.
I founded and ran my own nonprofit. It’s called Net Literacy. It started when I volunteered as an instructional aide in a computer class at a public library during middle school. I really enjoyed teaching computer skills to senior citizens, and I wanted to bring this experience to seniors in retirement homes, so a bunch of my friends and I started an organization.
Realizing that the digital divide is not limited to senior citizens, we broadened our mission to other programs including refurbishing computers and providing them to elementary school students who are on free or assisted lunch programs and teaching concepts such as responsible internet usage and financial literacy. We have over 3,000 volunteers and have increased computer access for over 250,000 individuals across the Midwest.
Coming from a policy background and a not-for-profit background, I really didn’t have formal training as a business professional. Yale SOM’s Silver Scholars Program stood out to me as an exceptional opportunity. Silver Scholars come to Yale SOM right after college for a year, complete a full-year MBA internship experience, and then return to Yale for the final year.
I’m interning at LegalZoom on the Research and Development Team, where we are combining personal service and technology to make legal services more accessible and more affordable to more people. I'm really getting an in-depth look into how this rapidly growing firm is scaling and continuing to innovate. Being exposed to all aspects of running a large technology company has made me realize how I’ve been very fortunate to experience Yale SOM’s integrated curriculum, which introduces us to different aspects of business and how everything integrates. I find that I’m now able to apply concepts from my classes on a daily basis. The frameworks that I learned in class, and in clubs like the Marketing Club and Tech Club, have given me a better grasp on our business’s products and operations, and helped me communicate the value and opportunity in new ideas.
