Colonel Rich Morales '99
Executive Director, Joining Forces, The White House
The absolutely most common thing that happens in complex military operations is that you have a detailed plan, then the enemy gets a vote, the weather gets a vote, equipment gets a vote, and you have to adapt.
Leadership in combat calls for quick thinking and quick adaptation under dangerous conditions—as well as keeping long-term goals in mind. U.S. Army Colonel Rich Morales ’99 led a battalion that included two future SOM students through a volatile area of Iraq in 2008. Morales is now the director of Joining Forces, a White House program that supports military families.
Morales spoke to Yale Insights in 2011 about the pressures and high stakes of combat leadership.
