From the Assistant Dean for Admissions: All New Haven Has to Offer

Students coming to Yale SOM know about the benefits of being part of a world-class university such as Yale, but they often don’t realize until they get here how much there is to experience in New Haven.

New Haven Labor Day Road Race

Earlier this week, for example, I participated in the 39th annual New Haven Labor Day Road Race, which also serves as U.S. national championship in the 20K. In addition to casual runners like myself, the race featured competitive athletes who had just returned from the Rio Olympics. The week before, I saw top tennis players compete at the Connecticut Open, the final ATP tennis tournament before the U.S. Open in New York (where, in addition to top players on the women’s tour we saw legends such as James Blake and Andy Roddick entertain the crowd). And in less than two weeks, the New Haven Grand Prix will bring a twilight bicycle race and street festival to the Downtown Green.

Connecticut Open

These events are just a few of the many attractions throughout the year in New Haven—from the renowned International Arts and Ideas Festival to the annual Jazz Festival to many other activities and events. There is theater and dining and arts of all sorts. And, of course, through Yale there are exceptional museums such as the Yale University Art Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art (the largest collection of British art outside the UK)—all open to the public. In short, there is no lack of things to do, not just at Yale, but throughout New Haven.

We invite you to join us here on campus to experience more of what Yale SOM and the larger Yale and New Haven communities have to offer. Our fall campus visit program started this week, and we will have visits throughout the fall semester. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our community, whether you plan to apply by our first application deadline a week from now on September 14, our second deadline on January 10, 2017, or sometime farther in the future.
