Case Preview: 360° Videos of London's Canary Wharf Financial District

How can developers convert a space designed exclusively for the financial district into one suitable for residents and artists? Explore the space on your own through this set of interactive 360° videos.

August 23, 2017

A collection of 360° videos shot on June 22, 2017 throughout London’s Canary Wharf Estate.

The Yale SOM Case Research and Development Team was allowed unfettered access to both the space and executive leadership of highly-secure Canary Wharf in order to produce a raw case study of the same name. Seeking to create the most engaging experience, our media producer used a relatively novel medium – 360° videos – to document the various spaces of the sprawling financial center in east London. These are the first 360° videos produced by the Yale SOM team.

Instructions: 360° video allows users to explore a shot in all its dimensions by giving them the ability to ‘move’ the camera horizontally (pan) and vertically (tilt) a full 360 degrees.  Desktop and laptop users can navigate shots by using the arrow icons on the upper left of the player screen, clicking-and-dragging the video with a mouse, or using the W, A, S, and D keys.  Mobile device users can also pan and tilt by moving their device accordingly.  For the most immersive experience, we recommend headphones.

For more information about each video, view them directly on YouTube.

The case will also feature access to the videos via an interactive map:

Each location pulls up its respective 360° video.

The case, “Canary Wharf,” explores themes of business & society through interactions between developers and the British government, Brexit and its impact on Canary Wharf’s financial institutions, Financial innovation as told through the estate’s tumultous history of capital acquisition, and spacemaking as developers seek to create a place where people not only work, but want to live as well.
