Position Focus: 

The Assistant Director, Annual Giving reports to the Director of Annual Giving and is responsible for supporting the development and execution of the annual giving program across all classes and constituencies at Yale School of Management, with a special focus on recent alumni. The Assistant Director will create a strategic plan to enhance the participation and total dollars raised from the most recent classes. Another primary responsibility will be to provide advanced analysis of the trends in giving across all classes using Excel, Yale’s Blackbaud CRM, and other software platforms.  Analysis will be used to drive improvements in participation and dollars raised.  We hope this position will bring best practices in data analytics to the team.  The Assistant Director will also assist in all aspects of the graduating Class Gift Program for all degree programs and will oversee any student fundraising for the SOM Internship Fund. Outstanding writing skills are needed as this position will be drafting creative and compelling appeals for annual fund solicitations.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Create a strategic plan for engaging, cultivating and stewarding recent SOM alumni to encourage their support of the SOM Alumni Fund. This might include regional events, special stewardship programs, and will require close collaboration with the Leadership Giving team and Director of Annual Giving.
  2. Become an expert with the Yale database and a leader on the development team with regards to analysis of the Alumni Fund donor base. Responsible for tracking weekly goals and pulling populations necessary for outreach and stewardship. Advanced Excel and Blackbaud CRM skills required to understand trends and giving habits of specific populations. Become an expert on how people and groups are coded in our system.
  3. Draft and edit language for persuasive annual fund appeals, create compelling stewardship communications, and ensure timely and customized communication to volunteers and donors. Must become an expert with SOM communications standards and collaborate effectively with other editorial and communications staff at the school.
  4. Under the direction of the Director of Annual Giving, responsible for working closely with all Alumni Volunteers and supporting peer-to-peer fundraising. In particular, this position will work with volunteers from the most recent class years and those who captain their regional committees in locations outside the U.S. to aid in maximizing participation among our international population.
  5. Work collaboratively with the Leadership Giving, Major Gifts and the Reunion Team to continue to identify alumni who can make stretch gifts to the Alumni Fund—especially for alumni in a Reunion Year.
  6. Assist with Alumni Fund special projects such as phonathons and giving challenges throughout the fiscal year. Work with Director of Annual Giving to track and improve the experience of our alumni who are members of Alumni Fund programs, such as SOM LOYAL, recognizing our consistent donors and our Leadership Giving Society, which honors our leadership donors to the Alumni Fund.
  7. Ensure that gifts and pledges are accurately booked in Yale’s tracking system, contacts are documented in a timely manner, and appropriate information is recorded in university records.

Required Education & Experience: 

Minimum requirement of Bachelor’s Degree in related field and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.   

Required Skills & Abilities:   

  1. Demonstrated ability and interest to personally solicit alumni fund gifts and manage and motivate volunteers. Ability to recruit, train, manage and solicit volunteers, and work cooperatively with the Director of Annual Giving to ensure successful volunteer experience.
  2. Demonstrated expertise with writing persuasive appeals and other related written communications, outstanding interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and experience handling confidential information. Strong initiative, creativity, organizational ability, and attention to detail.
  3. Proven advanced skills with Excel and CRM databases, preference for expertise and knowledge of Yale University’s Hopper alumni database. Advanced knowledge of Excel and other leading desktop technologies, along with the ability to adapt to and use future technologies.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team and to work collaboratively with other groups: Reunion Giving, Major Gifts, Alumni Relations, etc.
  5. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed.

Preferred:

Global orientation; experience working across countries and regions, and fluency in more than one language.
