Andrea Zapata MAM ’14
Post-MAM Position: Co-founder, Art Club
When I first came here, I had some ideas for businesses relating to art, but I wasn’t really clear on where to go from there. That’s the thing about the MAM: it connects you to support for your ideas.
I love art, and the art collection here at Yale University is one of the biggest university collections in the world. After I received my MBA from EGADE Business School, that factored into my decision to pursue the Master of Advanced Management here.
Going into art is not an easy business and it’s not commonplace. At Yale, I’m connecting the dots. When I first came here, I had some ideas for businesses relating to art, but I wasn’t really clear on where to go from there. That’s the thing about the MAM: it connects you to support for your ideas. David Bach, the senior associate dean for global programs, connected me with Professor Will Goetzmann, who is an expert in both art and finance. He oriented me and helped me find the right path to follow.
Right now, I’m helping to put together the Art, Mind, and Markets Conference at Yale SOM, working with people like the director of the Armory Show and an art advisor who helped to discover Jeff Koons. There are these networking opportunities for everyone here, including someone who wants to go into the art industry.
When I leave here, I plan to launch my own business, Art Club, along with my partner. We will be partnering with art galleries that don’t have enough space to show their entire collections, leasing some of the collections to medium-sized companies. Galleries will make money with their collections, and the companies will have access to art that would normally only be available to a larger company. We were accepted into the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute’s Venture Creation Program, and now we are prepared to launch the business when I leave SOM. Being a part of the SOM community has definitely changed my life.
